The two most common and costly diseases in commercial pig production in Canada are Porcine Circovirus Associated Diseases (PCVAD) and Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome (PRRS). Together, they cost the Canadian pig industry $100 million in losses every year. This project seeks to provide new diagnostic tools to select for pigs that are genetically less susceptible to PCVAD and PRRS and, at the same time, improve animal health and welfare, food safety, and reduce the cost of production. At the end of the project, these tools will be available for our industry partners such as Livestock Gentec and PigGen Canada (a consortium of nine pig breeding organizations). The key findings from this project may also benefit other animal species, lead to faster and more effective health monitoring, improved vaccines and innovative management practices.
